Pottstown Rumble Returns: The Biggest Grass Volleyball Tournament Gears Up for a Weekend Full of Action, Music, and Community Spirit

The renowned Pottstown Rumble grass volleyball tournament is back, larger than ever, and set to commence this Friday morning and continue through to Sunday evening.
Pottstown native and Rumble organizer, 58-year-old Ken Kaas, considers the 31st iteration of the event to be akin to a summertime Christmas. He cites the comments of a participant who suggested the Rumble should be celebrated like a national holiday. Kaas notes the sheer joy participants express, reminiscent of the excitement of childhood Christmas mornings, as the highest form of praise.
While the Pottstown Rumble should technically be in its 33rd year, obstacles including flooding in 2003 and the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 caused interruptions. However, it's now back and thriving. This year, the event expects to host over 5,000 players from diverse backgrounds and regions, solidifying its reputation as the largest and most competitive volleyball tournament in the country.
The tournament boasts an inviting festival atmosphere, complete with live music, food trucks, and beer tents, while simultaneously attracting some of the top-tier volleyball talent in the United States. Attendees can expect to see players like Olympic gold medalist Phil Dalhausser, and previous Men's Pro Open winners Tomas Goldsmith and Nolan Albrecht, the latter having led the NCAA Division III in kills as a senior at Belmont Abbey College.
Returning to the Rumble is Sarah Wood, a rising sophomore from Garnet Valley who had an outstanding freshman year of indoor volleyball. Last year, Wood became the youngest player in AVP history to qualify for a main draw at 14 years old. A year prior, she made the women's Rumble playoffs at just 13.
For the first time in the tournament's history, three additional satellite fields will be used, bringing the total number of nets across Memorial Park, Sundstrom, the Island, PAL, and Coventry to 225.
The tournament begins each day at 9 a.m. and includes a range of different competitions, culminating in the Co-ed Doubles, Quads, Men's Pro playoffs, and final on Sunday. A prize of $10,000 will be awarded to the first-place winners of both the men's and women's professional categories, with total prizes exceeding $60,000.
The Rumble retains traditional rules of 'side-out' scoring and an extra-long pool play format, maintaining the original large court size, which presents more of a challenge to the defensive play and ensures no match is over until the very end.
More than anything else, the three-day event is celebrated for its atmosphere: a harmonious mix of fierce competition, lively music, food and drinks, and a sense of community within Pottstown.
The Pottstown Rumble, described as a 'volleyball tournament run by the players, for the players,' started in 1991 as a one-day event with fewer than 200 players. Fast forward to 2022, the event attracted 5,500 players and offered $130,000 in cash prizes, making it the largest grass volleyball doubles tournament globally.
If you're interested in joining the fun as a spectator or player, you can find more details or register at www.pottstownrumble.com. The main event will be held at Memorial Park, Pottstown, 75 W King St, Pottstown, from June 23 to June 25. There's a $10 spectator fee, while children aged 12 and under enter free.

Unbelievable: How an Apple Watch Saved Her Life by Detecting a Deadly Blood Clot

Kimmie Watkins, a 29-year-old woman from Cincinnati, attributes her Apple Watch for saving her life by aiding doctors in detecting a potentially fatal blood clot in her lungs.
As reported by Paige Barnes at WKRC in Ohio, Watkins proudly sports her Apple Watch, hoping that her experience will persuade others to embrace health monitoring technologies.
Watkins mentioned, "It might be seen as staying too connected or something, but I think it can be helpful in a health sense, and not just in a connect to people sense."
Throughout her ordeal, Watkins also discovered that she has an unknown clotting disorder. Now on blood thinners, she is focused on regaining her strength.
The feature that identified the dangerous blood clot in her lungs is a standard function on the Apple Watch. The device continuously monitors heart rate and can identify an abnormal elevation during periods of inactivity.
In Watkins' case, she was taking a nap after feeling lightheaded and winded. During her sleep, her Apple Watch detected an irregular heartbeat of 178 beats per minute, triggering an alert that woke her up.
Reflecting on the incident, Watkins expressed gratitude for her device's intervention, stating, "I'm very lucky and that, if my nap hadn't ended, that my partner would have found me, maybe asleep on the couch, not actually sleeping instead of what did happen."
Upon seeking medical attention, Watkins was diagnosed with a saddle pulmonary embolism, a condition obstructing blood flow in both lungs and carrying a 50% mortality rate.
