As AI Emerges, Colleges & Universities Returning to Oral Exams

In response to a significant increase in academic dishonesty, professors are reintroducing oral exams as a means to assess students' genuine understanding. This return to a traditional testing method plays a crucial role in ensuring that universities grant diplomas to deserving students, safeguarding the value of those credentials.

Drawing inspiration from ancient Greek practices, the University of California San Diego has implemented oral exams as part of a campus-wide pilot program, conducting more than 7,000 exams to date. These exams typically span 10-15 minutes and involve a series of questions followed by inquiries into the reasoning behind students' answers.

By emphasizing critical thinking rather than rote memorization or regurgitation, oral exams inspire students and contribute to grade improvements. Moreover, they serve as a deterrent to cheating, a pervasive issue exacerbated by the prevalence of online learning and automated language models like ChatGPT.

One of the notable advantages of oral exams is their ability to replicate real-life situations, such as job interviews and presentations, where individuals must think on their feet and express their thoughts coherently.

In a world heavily influenced by digital technology, this analog approach to education marks a notable departure from the norm.

PHILLIES

Schwarber, Ellis homer twice as Phillies beat Nationals 11-3

The Philadelphia Phillies emerged victorious in a decisive rubber match against the Washington Nationals with an impressive 11-3 win on Sunday. Kyle Schwarber showcased his power with two three-run homers, while Drew Ellis contributed his first two home runs of the season. J.T. Realmuto continued his home run streak for the Phillies, and Nick Castellanos delivered a solid performance with three hits.

Schwarber's first home run in the sixth inning broke open a close 2-1 game, and he followed it up with another homer in the ninth. These blasts marked his 23rd career multi-homer game and his first of the season. Schwarber, the two-time defending National League Player of the Month for June, had a productive weekend series, going 5 for 15 and raising his batting average to .172.

Reflecting on his June success, Schwarber remarked, "It could be a coincidence I guess. I don't know. But I've got to be able to keep going out there and keep putting in quality at-bats. That's just what I try to tell myself each and every day."

Drew Ellis, who had only one career Major League home run before the game, had a remarkable performance, hitting a solo shot in the fifth inning and a two-run homer in the seventh. Ellis also walked twice, singled, and scored four runs in five plate appearances. The 27-year-old player was released by the Mariners in March but signed a minor-league contract with the Phillies on April 16. His call-up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley proved fruitful as he started all three games in the series.

Regarding his success, Ellis mentioned, "I think just getting consistent at-bats really helps. I've talked to Nick quite a bit, and he's helped me out with just riding this wave as long as possible."

Ranger Suárez, the Phillies' starter, displayed his skills on the mound, allowing only one run on eight hits with a walk and three strikeouts over seven innings. He continued his dominance against the Nationals, improving his career record against them to 6-0 with a 3.13 ERA in 12 outings, including five starts.

The Nationals' Ildemaro Vargas contributed a home run and a double, but it wasn't enough to turn the tide in their favor. Trevor Williams, the Nationals' pitcher, struggled, surrendering four runs on six hits, striking out six, and walking four.

The victory added to the Phillies' impressive record against the Nationals, as they have won 26 out of their past 30 matchups, boasting a remarkable .867 winning percentage. This marks their most wins in a 30-game span against any opponent since 1887-89.

Here are some of the Phils Highlights:

In unfortunate news, right-hander Stephen Strasburg, who last pitched for the Nationals in June 2022, remains inactive due to his recovery from thoracic outlet syndrome surgery. Manager Dave Martinez expressed his hopes for Strasburg's health and acknowledged the frustrations surrounding his ongoing rehabilitation.

Looking ahead, the Phillies' next series commences with a home game against the Detroit Tigers on Monday, with Aaron Nola taking the mound. Nola, who holds a 4-4 record and a 4.70 ERA this season, has been successful in his three career starts against the Tigers, boasting a 1-0 record and an impressive 1.93 ERA.

UNION

Union Get the Win vs CF Montreal 3-0

The Philadelphia Union continued their winning streak with a dominant 3-0 victory over CF Montreal on Saturday night. Julian Carranza shined for the Union, scoring his team-leading eighth and ninth goals of the season. Mikael Uhre also contributed with his sixth goal, extending Philadelphia's unbeaten run to nine matches in the league.

Philadelphia stands out as the only MLS team to have three players with six or more goals this season, with Carranza, along with Daniel Gazdag (seven goals), and Uhre. This offensive prowess has played a crucial role in the Union's success.

Goalkeeper Andre Blake showcased his skills by making two saves to secure his second consecutive clean sheet and sixth overall of the season. Philadelphia's defense was solid throughout the match, limiting Montreal to just two shots on target out of a total of nine.

Montreal made significant changes to their lineup, with head coach Hernan Losada implementing eight alterations from their previous match. The team had one eye on the upcoming Canadian Championship final against Vancouver, scheduled for Wednesday.

Despite Montreal's attacking ambition, their aggressive approach played into Philadelphia's strengths, allowing them to exploit opportunities on the counter-attack.

Carranza's opening goal in the 12th minute demonstrated his individual brilliance. Positioned on the left near the edge of the penalty area and faced with Bryce Duke's defense, the Argentine deceived his opponent by initially appearing to pass the ball into the box. Instead, he cleverly shifted to the right and unleashed a bending right-footed strike that evaded goalkeeper James Pantemis' dive, nestling just inside the far-right post.

The Union extended their lead in the 36th minute when Uhre capitalized on a chance created by Carranza. After receiving a pass on the right side of the area, Carranza fired a low shot toward Pantemis' goal from a difficult angle. Pantemis made the initial save, but Uhre was quick to react, flicking the rebound home from close range.

Carranza completed his brace and secured a 3-0 victory for Philadelphia around the 61st minute. His second goal took a couple of deflections en route to beating Pantemis.

Philadelphia's commanding win showcased their attacking prowess and defensive resilience. The team's impressive form will undoubtedly boost their confidence as they look ahead to future matches.
