Reading United Women's Squad Triumphs Over Hershey FC in Historic First Home Match

Melissa Martin, a former student of Gov. Mifflin, scored two goals, while Berks Catholic alumna Gabriella Kurtas made a strong midfield contribution, propelling the Reading United women's soccer team to a 4-3 triumph over Hershey FC. This marked the first home game for the team at Alvernia University on Friday.

So far, United has a track record of 1 win, 0 losses, and 1 draw in the Women's Premier Soccer League.

Hershey FC had the initial advantage with a 1-0 lead, thanks to Katelyn Monette's goal scored in the opening minute. However, United turned the tide and dominated for most of the game.

The score was leveled in the 10th minute, courtesy of a penalty kick from Becca Kotula, a Wyomissing alumna, following a defensive foul committed by Hershey within the penalty area, instigated by Kurtas. Martin's 20-yard strike four minutes later put Reading in the lead.

In the second half, Martin netted another goal in the 55th minute, finishing a pass from Kurtas. At the 72nd minute, Olivia Thompson scored a goal assisted by Abbey White, a Schuylkill Valley alumna, taking the score to 4-1.

Hershey made a late comeback attempt as Monette managed to score two more goals in the 89th and the 91st minutes, making the final score 4-3. The game ended at the restart by the center official.

United coach Tom Gosselin, in a press statement, lauded the evening as a fantastic moment for women's soccer. He praised the team's performance, expressing satisfaction at their talent display, and entertaining the fans. He noted that the team is making progress faster than expected, learning from every game, and looking forward to nurturing the team's talent and showcasing it to the fans.

United's next game is scheduled against PA Classics on Friday, May 26, at 7 p.m., to be held at Alvernia.
