27th Annual Tribute to Exceptional Women and Girls Celebrates Inspirational Achievements

The 27th annual Tribute to Exceptional Women and Girls was held at the Valley Forge Casino and Resort in King of Prussia. The event, organized by the YWCA Tri-County Area, aimed to recognize and honor women and girls who embody the organization's mission of eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all.

This year, the YWCA Tri-County Area received nominations for 33 exceptional women and 13 exceptional girls from the community. In an effort to honor all nominees without restrictions or preconceived notions, the organization eliminated award categories from the nomination process. Initially, the plan was to honor five women and five girls with the Persimmon Paragon Award, but the voting committee was so impressed with the pool of candidates that they unanimously agreed to honor six exceptional women instead.

The exceptional women recognized at the event were Alana Hook, Linda Anthony, Denise Flynn, Makenzie Clanagan, Melissa Monser, and Michaela Richardson. The exceptional girls honored were Layla Bearden, Arlene Cadogan, Stephanie Sellers, Kate Bicalho, and Clara Johnson.

The event included various activities such as facilitated discussions, awards, music, and testimonials from participants whose lives have been positively impacted by the YWCA Tri-County Area. The keynote speaker was Kim Brazwell, the CEO of Kimistry and a highly requested coach and speaker. Proceeds from the event supported the YWCA Tri-County Area's mission.

Additionally, the article mentions the upcoming Week Without Violence (WWV) event, which is observed by YWCA associations worldwide. The event aims to promote unity, reject violence, and create a safe space for conversations and healing. This year's Week Without Violence will be held from October 16 to October 21, featuring a community block event in Pottstown. The event will include various activities such as art installations, contests, performances, community resources, and employment opportunities.

Individuals interested in participating in the Week Without Violence event as artists, community partners, vendors, or sponsors are encouraged to contact the YWCA Tri-County Area.

Pennsylvania Senate Passes Bill Providing Identification Kits for First-Grade Students

The Pennsylvania State Senate has passed a bill that would provide identification kits to the families of first-grade students.

These kits contain materials for fingerprinting, DNA collection, and other identifying information. The purpose is to assist police investigations in case the children ever go missing.

The bill passed with a vote of 34-15 and will now move on to the state House for consideration. The kits would be distributed to first-grade students in schools free of charge by November 15 each year.

It's important to note that the information collected would not be entered into any state or national database, according to the sponsors of the bill.

Blue Marsh Lake Upgraded to Harmful Algal Bloom Advisory Status, Caution Urged for Visitors

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Philadelphia District has upgraded the harmful algal bloom status at Blue Marsh Lake in Leesport, Pennsylvania, from a watch status to a harmful algal bloom advisory status.

This update is due to the presence of moderate levels of blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria, in the lake, along with the potential for harmful toxins.

Visitors to the lake are urged to avoid contact with the water in areas where it appears discolored or where foam, scum, or algae mats are visible on the surface.

It is particularly important to be cautious with children and pets, as they are more vulnerable to the toxins produced by blue-green algae.

More information on harmful algal blooms and associated risks can be found on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' website or by contacting the park office.

Pottstown Man Charged with First-Degree Murder Following Fatal Domestic Dispute

Kevin Morgan, a 34-year-old man from Pottstown, has been charged in connection to the fatal shooting of Derek Mayo, 38, from Parkesburg. The incident occurred during an apparent domestic dispute on the 500 block of May Street. Mayo, shot in the chest, was transported to Pottstown Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Mayo had arrived at the scene in a car driven by his long-term girlfriend, Kelsay Love-Shellar. She shares custody of a 12-year-old daughter with the suspect, Morgan. The dispute erupted when Morgan went to deliver his daughter to Love-Shellar's car.

Pottstown Police and Montgomery County Detectives established through their investigation that Mayo was unarmed and no weapon was found in Love-Shellar's vehicle. After police approached Morgan's residence, they found two firearms "in plain view on a bed." A further search, conducted with a warrant, uncovered a total of six guns in the house, five of which were semi-automatic pistols. One pistol, a Taurus G2C with an empty cartridge jammed in the barrel, is suspected to be the murder weapon. All firearms were legally owned by Morgan.

After interviewing several neighbors, who confirmed hearing the gunshot and parts of the argument, police arrested Morgan. He now faces charges of first-degree murder, third-degree murder, possessing an instrument of crime, reckless endangerment of another person, and endangering the welfare of a child. Morgan is currently being held without bail at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility, awaiting arraignment and a preliminary hearing. An autopsy revealed that Mayo died from the gunshot wound, confirming the homicide.

Castellanos, Sosa and Harrison go deep to help the Phillies beat Cubs 8-5

The Philadelphia Phillies secured an 8-5 victory against the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday night, with notable performances from Nick Castellanos, Edmundo Sosa, and Josh Harrison. Castellanos and Sosa both homered in the second inning, contributing to the win, while Harrison added a solo home run in the fifth. This victory marks Philadelphia's 17th win in 22 games, and the eighth consecutive road win, equalling their longest streak since 2011.

Chicago Cubs' Drew Smyly had a challenging night, allowing seven runs and nine hits over just 3 2/3 innings. His reliever, Hayden Wesneski, let through one run and two hits over 4 1/3 innings.

Despite the defeat, there was a noteworthy moment for Chicago’s Jared Young, who hit his first career home run in his first at-bat this season. Dansby Swanson also added a solo drive for the Cubs in the fifth. However, the team has now lost three straight games after previously winning nine out of 10.

USMNT Crushes St. Kitts and Nevis 6-0

The United States dominated St. Kitts and Nevis 6-0 in the Concacaf Gold Cup on Wednesday night, with Jesús Ferreira and Djordje Mihailovic making significant contributions. Ferreira scored his second international hat trick, while Mihailovic scored two goals. This fast-paced play saw the US secure a 3-0 lead by the 16th minute.

Ferreira now boasts 11 goals in 20 appearances, making him the quickest American player to reach double-digit goals. Notably, seven of these goals were scored against St. Kitts and Grenada. He joins the ranks of Landon Donovan, Peter Millar, Jozy Altidore, and Clint Dempsey as the fifth American with multiple hat tricks.

Mihailovic also recorded two assists in the match, contributing to the US matching their largest Gold Cup victory margin.
