Penn State Berks to Welcome 360

New Students with Action-Packed Orientation Weekend

Penn State Berks is set to welcome approximately 360 first-year students to its residential community on Friday, Aug. 23, 2024, as part of the campus's annual orientation program. The move-in process for these new students will take place between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., with returning students scheduled to move in over the weekend on Aug. 24 and 25.

The orientation kicks off with a Welcome Weekend featuring various programs and activities designed to help new students transition into college life. At 4 p.m. on Friday, students will say goodbye to their families before attending a Welcome Weekend Kick-off event and a New Student Program led by Bonny Shade, an expert on campus-based sexual violence and community building. This will be followed by a Residence Hall Orientation aimed at helping students establish connections, understand residence hall policies, and adjust to their new living environment. Commuter students will also have a special dinner at Tully’s cafeteria, with evening social activities starting at 7:30 p.m.

The orientation activities continue on Saturday, Aug. 24, with a pep rally at 10 a.m. in the Beaver Athletics and Wellness Center gymnasium, followed by various breakout sessions, an ice cream social with alumni, and a carnival in the evening. On Sunday, Aug. 25, the day starts with a 'First-Gen Coffee and Donuts' event, followed by first-year programming, a campus resource tour, and an honors program orientation, concluding the Welcome Weekend at 3 p.m.

The Welcome Weekend Program is supported by student orientation leaders, resident assistants, and various college community members. It is funded by the Penn State Berks Student Initiated Fee and organized by the Office of Student Leadership and Engagement.

Chester County Distributes Free Potassium Iodide for Residents
Near Nuclear Plants

homer simpson episode 20 GIF

Chester County is taking steps to enhance emergency preparedness by offering free potassium iodide (KI) tablets to individuals living or working within a 10-mile radius of the Limerick Generating Station or Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station. The KI tablets, which help protect the thyroid gland from the harmful effects of radioactive iodine during a radiological emergency, are available due to the approaching expiration of previously distributed tablets in 2024.

The primary dispensing event will be held on Saturday, Aug. 24, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Kimberton Fire Company, located at 2276 Kimberton Rd, Phoenixville, PA. Pre-registration for the event is encouraged, with the KI tablets provided having an expiration date of January 31, 2034. Alongside the distribution of KI tablets, a Community Resource Fair will be hosted, offering information on various services including drug and alcohol support, mental health resources, senior services, disability services, food access, and healthcare.

Businesses and organizations can pick up bulk orders of KI tablets on Friday, Aug. 23, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., also at the Kimberton Fire Company. Pre-registration is required for bulk pickups.

In addition to the event in Phoenixville, a drive-through KI distribution will be held on Saturday, Aug. 24, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Limerick Fire Company, 390 W. Ridge Pike, Royersford, PA. This event is specifically for residents within a 10-mile radius of the Limerick Generating Station, with no pre-registration necessary. Residents may pick up KI tablets for themselves and others who are unable to attend.

For those unable to attend the August events, KI tablets are available year-round at the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services Office of Public Health Pottstown Health Center, located at 364 East King Street, Pottstown, PA. Tablets can be picked up Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. by calling 610.970.5040 or submitting a request online.

Rookie Schwellenbach Shines as Braves Edge Phillies in 3-2 Victory

Phillies

Rookie pitcher Spencer Schwellenbach retired 19 straight batters, leading the Atlanta Braves to a 3-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. Schwellenbach struck out nine over 6 2/3 innings, while Adam Duvall's solo homer provided the offensive spark. The Braves secured the series win but remain six games behind the Phillies in the NL East race.

Eagles Acquire WR Jahan Dotson from Commanders in Multi-Pick Trade

The Philadelphia Eagles have bolstered their receiving corps by trading for Washington Commanders wide receiver Jahan Dotson, a former standout at Nazareth Area High School and Penn State. In the trade, the Eagles will receive Dotson and a fifth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, while sending a third-round pick and two seventh-round picks to the Commanders.

Dotson, who was drafted by Washington in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, has recorded 84 receptions for 1,041 yards and 11 touchdowns over two seasons. Known for his playmaking ability, Dotson is expected to add depth and versatility to the Eagles' offense.

Before his NFL career, Dotson was a star at Penn State, where he played in 42 games, starting 38 of them. He finished his college career with 183 receptions for 2,757 yards and 25 touchdowns, earning third-team Associated Press All-America honors in his senior season.

Dotson's return to Pennsylvania marks a homecoming for the 2018 Nazareth High School graduate, who had a stellar career with the Nittany Lions before making the leap to the NFL.
